Statement on the Passing of Hideaki Hatta, President and Chief Executive Officer
We regret to announce the passing of our company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Hideaki Hatta, on February 16, 2026, at the age of 76.
We extend our deepest gratitude for the kindness and support shown to him throughout his life and respectfully provide this statement with sincere appreciation.
Since our founding in 1985, for more than four decades, he served as President with the guiding principle of ‘all-hands-on-deck,’ striving to build an entertainment company that values people and is grounded in sincere animation production.
Shinichiro Hatta has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer effective immediately to continue the work and values carried on by Hideaki Hatta. We remain committed to creating work that can be enjoyed by people all over the world, carrying forward the spirit in our ‘all-hands-on-deck’ principle.
In addition, the wake and funeral service were held privately among family members. No floral tributes, monetary contributions, or visits will be accepted under any circumstances. We thank you for your understanding.

From my own perspective—Hatta and his wife, who founded the studio, managed to create one of the shining beacons of the anime industry that always put people first. Hatta's management helped the studio become what it is today, and become quite profitable despite the odds. (As my friend points out, Hatta came from a background of railroad accounting! In an anime industry full of terrible management and bleeding finances, he knew how to effectively run a studio, and it is no doubt thanks to him that they made the transition into being a studio that is unlike most of the anime industry.) He also led the company through the horrific tragedy of the arson attack. Hatta will be sorely missed.

It's pretty amazing. Kyo-ani started off as a secondary contract studio that specialized in coloring animation cels that didn't even have its own sakuga (drawing) staff, and its first generation employees were mostly part-time housewives in Kyoto that were trained by Hatta's wife, Yoko Hatta.
Yoko was really central to the initial artistic side of Kyo-ani at the start, as she was trained by the legendary Tezuka Osamu (the father of Japanese manga and animation) at Tezuka's anime studio Mushi-Productions, as well as her connections in the anime industry to Kusube Daikichiro (Shinei Doga), Tatsunoko Productions, and Sunrise that helped Kyo-ani get contract work from major studios as it was starting out. Yoko also basically personally trained Kyoani-'s initial staff single-handedly, since she founded an anime trade school in Kyoto in 1981 that formed essentially the precursor to Kyo-ani.
So training animators in-house has been a part of Kyoani's DNA since its initial founding.

It was always an interesting read when I was more into learning about the industrial side of anime and how well regarded KyoAni is. From stuff like actually having salaried staff and normal working hours, to a culture that fosters in-house development of animators. You could see financial reports and they were consistently posting significant profits in an industry where margins are tight and people worked to the bone. Shows what you can do when you take care of your work force instead of trying to bleed them dry.

Oh my goodness. I'm at an incredible loss for words. Everything Hatta has done for the company, and thus for the industry at large, is commendable and respectable. His handling of the arson assured that I could never forget him as a genuinely incredible person, even if the practices, culture, and creative output of his company were more than convincing enough as is.
